You may think Greenwich Village needs another Mexican restaurant like it needs a new nail salon or another bank branch, but this recently opened restaurant brought to you by chef David Schuttenberg (of Fatty Crab fame), is worth taking a closer look at. You get the idea it isn’t just another burrito joint the moment you approach the restaurant and are welcomed by a brightly colored goat looming over the front. The restaurant is charming with stucco walls, a hand painted bar, and (weather permitting) a back patio. Cabrito’s signature dish is the baby goat, rubbed with a mixture of garlic, orange, and chili. It’s then slow roasted in a banana leaf and served with salsa made from citrus and tequila. For the less adventurous, traditional Mexican sandwiches called Cemitas are a popular alternative. The bar serves a variety of tequilas to drink as is or to mix in a delicious margarita.
